Ward Schepman · Painting, music and connection

I’m Ward Schepman, a visual artist working in Utrecht, the Netherlands. My paintings explore the beauty of connection with ourselves, with each other, with nature and with life.

Music is part of my process. I often play a single track on repeat and let rhythm, movement and feeling find their way into the paint. Fingers, palette knives and conductor’s batons leave traces on the surface.

My five projects each approach connection from a different perspective. Some are deeply personal. Others look towards the wider world. I hope the work makes room for recognition, feeling and, sometimes, a smile.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The beauty
of connection.

We share the world, but know only part of one another. Behind every face is a world of memories, longing, loss and hope. For me, connection begins with recognising that inner world. We can touch one another without fully understanding one another, through a smile, a tear or a shared silence.

Connection also asks us to encounter ourselves. Our grief and memories, our desires and what gives us direction. How open can we be to what lives within us?

In my art, I explore connection with myself and with others. My lines, colours and figures move between distance and closeness, vulnerability and trust.

I make art to give form to what connects us with each other, with nature and with our inner lives. To offer room for recognition and for the beauty of connection. Sometimes with a tear, sometimes with a smile.

LIVE PAINTING

A shared moment.

Painting live brings my inner world into a shared space. Music, gestures and paint meet the people watching. The work takes shape between us.
